about

Please note the stories on the site at present are holder content!

From the networked intelligence of the mycelial substrate to the cloud computing services powering illicit trade online, Of Beasts and Men is a platform for dynamic storytelling about animals and wildlife, supply chains and exploitation, and the survival of species within increasingly complex systems.

Its guiding principle is that humans ought to view themselves as part of their environment, and not some thing apart. After all, we're not so different.

ethos

Of Beasts and Men places a premium on ground-level reporting, and seeks to amplify local voices and actors.

All too often, the people who need to be heard aren't given a platform. This isn't the kind of reporting that can be done remotely or from press releases – and it's the antidote to AI slop. Ambitious reporting takes time and resources.

We're pro-collaboration, and pro-complexity.

a note on funding

Paywalls are a form of class warfare – content on this site will always be accessible for free, and is available to republish with attribution on a Creative Commons 4.0 licence.

At this stage this an entirely self-funded undertaking, so if you like what you see and are in a position to do so, please consider becoming a supporter.

All proceeds will go toward reporting and producing ever-better quality features, and making stories available in multiple languages – particularly those germane to the subject matter. Information shouldn't be sandboxed away from non-English speakers.

And if you're a billionaire looking for ways to shed some pennies, you can get in touch to sponsor a story — or just hit the tip jar.
